This first volume of two opens with a sketch of Jewish society in pre-70 CE Judaea and in the diaspora, then describes the Jewish schools of Qumran/Essenes, Sadducees, Pharisees, and Nazoraeans or Christians, and ends with the tumultuous mid-first century and the Jewish war against Rome and its impact. By simultaneously studying Jewish and Christian sources within the purview of Roman history, it affords many new insights into long-debated questions.
The second volume is to write the further history of Jews and Christians and their relationships as these were impacted by two more catastrophic wars, and up to the relative stability of the late second century CE.
